Summary:
In the segregated south of
Kentucky
in 1953, twelve-year-olds Callie, who is black, and Wendell, who is white, are brought together by an old dog that is clearly seeking something or someone, but they not only face prejudice, they find trouble at a haunted cabin in the woods.
There's an old yellow dog wandering around town, and you can bet that eleven-year-old Callie - fearless, a little stubborn, and a lot nosy - is gonna figure out who he belongs to. But her sleuthing causes her to cross paths with Wendell, a white boy her very same age. As the two try to find the old dog's owner, their segregated town doesn't take kindly to their new friendship. Meanwhile, a nearly invisible boy has lost his dog. He can't remember when exactly, and he can't figure out why he's stuck in a cabin by the river. His companion, a younger boy who's been invisible far longer, explains that they are ghosts, but they can't seem to cross the river to the other side just yet ... As Callie's and Wendell's yellow-dog quest brings them closer to the invisible boys - the townspeople's prejudice flares, and soon flames of anger and hate will threaten everyone. Trouble the Water, a story that spans lifetimes, shows that history never does go away and that the past can haunt us until we are shaken to change the present and stand, together, for what is right.
